To celebrate the spooky holiday, the 38-year-old multi-hyphenate turned into a real-life version of E.T., the beloved character from ‘s 1982 film,
“You finally came home. 🛸👆🏽Welcome back E.T. 🥹Thank you Google Maps. 🛸 Starring yours truly as both E.T. & Janellllliot,” the performer, who goes by she/her and they/them pronouns, wrote while sharing photos of the extravagant costume on , Wednesday, Oct. 30.
She also channeled E.T. for , which airs on Thursday, Oct. 31.
The talk show shared a preview of the episode on and , showing Monáe in full costume as she greeted host .

“I never would’ve guessed I would’ve got to meet E.T.,” said Hudson in the clip as Monáe repeated Hudson’s name and her prosthetic finger lit up.
An overjoyed Hudson then told the audience, “E.T. knows my name. Thank you for coming to the happy place. I don’t know if I should say Janelle or E.T.,” to which Monáe responds, “E.T. is Janelle Monáe.”

“I’ve shared a costume idea with someone’s team, actually, and tried to get a price for how much it would cost. And then I found out that person was going to be that and I had been planning this costume for two years,” she recalled to PEOPLE, only noting at the time that she would be dressed as “an iconic movie character.”
While she added that she would have “multiple costumes,” she revealed why dressing up as E.T. was special to her.
“It’s such a happy thing for me where I’m like, ‘Oh, I’m going to get to transform into this.’ I remember how I felt when I watched this character, and I can’t wait to pay homage to it,” she said.
