Spooky season is now upon us, and movie lovers everywhere will be frantically searching for the perfect horror movie to celebrate all hallows eve. Well, we may have just the Netflix horror movie for you this Halloween, and it just so happens to hold a perfect rating of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Titled His House, the horror thriller outing was released by the streaming giant back in 2020, and offers not only an unrelentingly creepy atmosphere, but scares and terror from both the supernatural and the real-world as this story of a refugee couple who find themselves surrounded by evil takes you by the throat and refuses to let go. Written and directed by Remi Weekes from a story by Felicity Evans and Toby Venables, His House stars Wunmi Mosaku (Batman v Superman, Loki) and Sope Dirisu (Gangs of London, Slow Horses) as the leads, with the rest of the cast comprised of Matt Smith (Doctor Who, House of the Dragon), Javier Botet (It), Emily Taaffe (The Beast Must Die), Malaika Abigaba, and Dominic Coleman (Yesterday, Paddington). You can check out the official synopsis for His House below.
“A refugee couple makes a harrowing escape from war-torn South Sudan, but then they struggle to adjust to their new life in an English town that has an evil lurking beneath the surface.”
What Did Critics Say About His House?
His House holds a coveted “Certified Fresh” rating of 100% on the Tomatometer. So what did critics say at the time about this haunting tale and directorial debut from filmmaker Remi Weekes. Elisa Guimarães of Collider heaped praise on the horror flick and its “legitimately terrifying moments, from incredibly tense sequences to killer jump scares.”
“His House is a horror movie in which the horror goes way beyond the supernatural. It is a ghost story in which the ghosts will live with the characters forever, no matter what they do.”
Odie Henderson of RogerEbert.com found the movie to be so scary that they resorted to horror-viewing cliché, and applauded how the story blends real-life trauma with supernatural scares.
“The intensity level is impressive in the haunting scenes, so much so that, at one point, I caught myself watching through my fingers.”
