Star Wars: Skeleton Crew promises to be a new chapter in the galaxy far, far away, but it’s set in an all-too-familiar place in the timeline. Labeled as the Star Wars version of The Goonies, Skeleton Crew stars Jude Law mentoring a group of children who find themselves stranded in the vast universe, looking for their way back home. However, Star Wars fans won’t be as lost as the adolescent group, as the events of the upcoming Disney+ series fall right in line with previous shows.
According to Empire Magazine (via ScreenRant), Skeleton Crew takes place “concurrently with The Mandalorian and Ahsoka.” For those excited about venturing into a new corner of the Star Wars universe, it seems the latest series simply reverts to familiar territory despite an intriguing logline. Still, the Skeleton Crew does not seem to connect directly to those shows mentioned above, but it is significant that Disney seemingly went out of their way to confirm its place on the timeline. This leads to the possibility of crossovers in the future, which Lucasfilm has not shied away from on the streaming platform.
The Star Wars timeline in which the Skeleton Crew calls home is officially dubbed The New Republic. The era also includes The Book of Boba Fett, The Mandalorian (and its feature film), and Ahsoka. Set many years before the Rise of the First Order, this part of the Star Wars timeline is where Dave Filoni and co. have dedicated much of their creative time. Once again, it’s unclear if the Skeleton Crew will include other characters that were present during this period, but it most likely can’t be a coincidence.
What is the Skeleton Crew About?
Inspired by The Goonies, Star Wars: Skeleton Crew is a coming-of-age story that takes a more grounded approach to the iconic sci-fi franchise. While some have criticized the show’s apparent dedication to making the galaxy far, far away feel much closer to Earth, it appears the Skeleton Crew will be using the classic kids-in-trouble concept to good use. When asked about his debut in Star Wars, Jude Law discussed the show’s place in the grander universe and potential easter eggs for longtime fans.
“It is a fun place to be, the universe of Star Wars, and there are great references to old films and recent episodes and series . There’s a lot of originality and I hope that will bring the feeling of fun to those who watch it. If you look carefully, [we] got some Star Wars tech that dates right back, I believe, to the original film. I can’t wait. I mean, even in the first episode, there’s a couple really, really great references that certain fans will immediately recognize.”
