In a new conversation with Playboy, Courtney LaPlante slammed the metal scene for its ‘fake’ support of musicians.
“Reddit forums are where fans are free from you, where they can say what they like and don’t like without your presence affecting them,” the Spiritbox singer said. “It’s important to give them that space so they feel comfortable being honest…”
She continued, “What’s missing in the industry is real critique. We’re too protective of each other. Publicly, it’s rare to find negative reviews, but behind the scenes—everyone’s talking mad sh*t about each other. In contrast, the hip-hop world is more open about calling out when something doesn’t work. We need more of that honesty in our genre.”
LaPlante also talked about the hatred in the music industry in a previous interview. She said when asked whether too much hate has reduced the meaning of hating, “I think we’re protective of one another. We don’t want to add to the hatred. Personally, I just kind of want to worry about myself and not always be talking mad sh*t.”
The vocalist added, “There’s just so much more horrible stuff within our music industry other than how sh*tty the band’s music is that I’m passionate about. And maybe metal’s always been a lot more conservative than we’ve let on.”
“The hardcore world and the metal guy world are so pushing together now, because it’s less insulated and we’re seeing there’s a lot of traditional values in metal,” Courtney also shared.
She reflected more on the metal world, “I’m just surprised because this world likes to believe that it’s this rebellious, edgy world. But in fact I feel like it’s become this really boomer — well not become, it’s just an older world.”
Spiritbox is currently on tour. After performing in Saint Paul, Minnesota on October 27, they will perform in Brazil on November 30. They will head towards Europe in February 2025.
