Cheers co-stars Ted Danson and Kelsey Grammer have opened up about a spat the two had while appearing on the Emmy Award-winning comedy series. During the October 23 episode Where Everybody Knows Your Name with Ted Danson and Woody Harrelson (Sometimes), Danson apologized to a Grammer for an argument they had during Cheers‘ run. While the two did not elaborate on details surrounding the disagreement, Danson accepted blame and apologized to the Fraiser star:
“I feel like I got stuck a little bit with you during the
Cheers
years. I have a memory of getting angry at you once and it stuck in both of our memories, but I feel like… F—, I don’t know, I missed out on the last 30 years of Kelsey Grammer. I feel like it’s my bad, my doing, and I almost feel like apologizing to you. No, I don’t feel like, I apologize to you and me that I sat back and didn’t, and I really do apologize.”
Grammer clearly appreciated the apology, saying:
“Thank you. I wish we’d spent some more time together.”
Of course, being co-stars on a series for many years, the two did spend a lot of time together, which Danson fondly recalled, saying, “What an amazing thing, that time we all spent together. You can go off in different directions, have different lives, but that bond, that love of making something really funny and really good and cracking each other up.” While many will be unaware that the pair at odds, it’s nice to see that everything is now patched up between the two sitcom icons.
Is a Cheers Reunion Looming?
Danson starred in the sitcom as Sam Malone, a former relief pitcher who owned the bar, during the show’s entire 11-season run. Grammer joined the Cheers cast during its third season (in 1984), as Dr. Frasier Crane, a romantic interest to Shelley Long’s Diane Chambers. Grammer would remain on the series until its concluding season in 1993, and Dr. Frasier Crane would be back months later on Frasier. Grammer continued his portrayal of the character for another 11 seasons until 2004 and recently returned as the quirky psychiatrist for Paramount+’s revival, which is currently in its second season.

Danson and Grammer appeared together on stage during a Cheers cast reunion at the 75th annual Emmy Awards, alongside Rhea Perlman, John Ratzenberger, and George Wendt. Grammer called the moment a “long-overdue class reunion.” With Frasier now back on our screens (and the iconic character now living in Boston, where Cheers was based), hope has been renewed for another cast reunion. While Grammer has been hesitant to see his character back at his original Boston hangout, he has expressed interest in having Cheers cast members join him on the Frasier revival series. Of Danson’s Sam Malone, he previously shared:
“There were some thoughts about the possibility. It would have to be the right thing. If he’s still alive. If Sam Malone’s still alive and has some sort of vital connection that would help Frasier move to another place. It’s all gotta be about growth and what’s funny.”
