God Of War has found itself a new showrunner as development ramps up on the video game adaptation series. Amazon Studios has brought in the TV-making machine behind the hit series Outlander as a replacement after announcing the original producers had left the project. Previous showrunner, Lee Judkins, is currently producing another Amazon series, The Wheel of Time, but separated from the Sony TV project along with executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus after turning in several scripts. While happy with their work done since the beginning of the development of the series, producers Amazon and Sony TV decided they wanted to take the project in a different direction.
Now, the mantle has been passed to Ronald D. Moore who will write, executive produce, and serve as the showrunner for the upcoming God Of War series. Moore has a background in sci-fi fantasy shows, writing for Star Trek: Generations and producing Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: The Next Generation. The successful writer and producer was also the showrunner of the award-winning Battlestar Galactica series, so manning an adaptation of an action-packed video game inspired by Norse mythology seems suitable for the fantasy creator.
In June, Moore signed a multi-year overall deal with Sony TV. The God Of War series will be Moore’s first new major project since his return to Sony TV after his time spent creating and developing Outlander for Starz and For All Mankind for Apple TV+, which both have spinoffs, Blood of My Blood and Star City respectively, in the works. The success of Moore’s past projects is certainly promising for God Of War fans.
Video Game Adaptations Are All the Rage
Video games are becoming mainstream in the movie and television world, with adaptations like HBO’s The Last of Us and Fallout from Amazon Prime proving the value of retelling the stories for a wider film audience. Following their commercial success, the second seasons of both series are well underway. Those respectful adaptations of the massively popular game series show recognition of not only the work being done in the gaming industry, but also the need to bring their stories to the cinematic world. The video game industry has been producing infatuating tales for decades, giving those who dare to adapt their content plenty to work with and to possibly add to.
