Season 2 of Netflix’s comedy-drama Beef has received a green light with an entirely new cast. The series created by Lee Sung Jin in cooperation with A24 was critically acclaimed upon release, but the second season will only bring back the team behind the camera and renew the faces in front of it.
Beef Season 2 will also shorten its running time, going from ten to eight episodes in a 30-minute format. As Variety reports, there’s an official synopsis already for the second season which will star Oscar Isaac, Cailee Spaeny, Carey Mulligan, and Charles Melton, among others. There’s no confirmation as to where it will take place, but the plot description goes as follows:
“A young couple witnesses an alarming fight between their boss and his wife, triggering chess moves of favors and coercion in the elitist world of a country club and its Korean billionaire owner.”
Before starring in Beef Season 2, Isaac’s run on television has been formidable. His roles in Moon Knight, Show Me a Hero, and Scenes From a Marriage are arguably the best highlights of those shows. Melton’s TV performances include Riverdale and American Horror Story, while Mulligan has only a few TV credits to her name, including Netflix’s Collateral. Spaeny is going through her best year so far, with notable performances in the films Civil War, Alien: Romulus and Priscilla. She also had great roles in TV series like Mare of Easttown and Devs.
Beef Season 1 starred Steven Yeun and Ali Wong as Danny and Amy, two Asian Americans living on opposite sides of California. Danny is a building contractor with an unstable business, while Amy is a rich entrepreneur living in a mansion. One day, they’re both involved in a road rage incident, and neither of them stops at the right time: they begin hunting each other in order to finish their business. But what are they looking for? What’s the ultimate goal in a cat-and-mouse game that gets very unsettling?
Though Yeun and Wong won’t be back as Danny and Amy, respectively, they’ll work alongside Lee as executive producers with Jake Schreier at their side.
Beyond the Basic Themes of Beef Season 1
The first season of Beef was a glimpse into the cynical side of American society, as seen from the eyes of strangers who had more in common than they thought. Real social issues are visible in the stories of Amy and Danny, two figures of modern society with enough urgency in their lives that they can’t imagine the consequences of their acts. What started as a comedy turned into a heartbreaking reflection of ourselves and the way we want society to believe in us.
