To the disappointment of Spawn fans everywhere, producer Jason Blum has sadly poured a large bucket of cold water over the prospect of the long-gestating reboot hitting theaters any time soon. Speaking with Brandon Davis at New York Comic Con, Blum, who has previously stated that the Spawn remake was eyeing a 2025 release, has now said that, while a script has been completed, it’s not “exactly right.”
“We got a script a while ago and we’re working on the script but I’m not gonna make a movie until the script is exactly right. It’s not exactly right yet. You know…I hope we get into production…But I am not gonna go into production on it until we have a script that we love.”
This latest update is sure to have many fans slumping their shoulders and sighing in disappointment, as the founder and CEO of Blumhouse Productions declared this time last year that the new Spawn movie would be released in 2025, saying in no uncertain terms, “2025 is when Spawn is going to come out. I stand by that. I stand by that.”
While this could still be the case (we’re still in 2024 after all), it doesn’t sound like the project is all that close to entering production. Nor does it sound like Blum will move forward with the movie until the script is perfect. Which, of course, is no bad thing, but could mean we’ll be waiting even longer than we already have for Spawn to make a live-action comeback.
Jamie Foxx Will Star as Spawn in the Reboot
Created by Todd McFarlane in 1992, Spawn begins life as an assassin named Albert Francis Simmons before being murdered and making a deal to become a Hellspawn. While he begins by doing Hell’s bidding, Spawn soon finds a new purpose in stopping evil, battling street gangs and organized crime as a demonic antihero. The comic book character has been given the live-action treatment before in 1997’s Spawn starring Michael Jai White. But, unfortunately, the movie was mauled by critics, with fans having waited for the character to be resurrected ever since.

The current reboot has now been in development for some time, undergoing several rewrites, with the most recent being done by Scott Silver, Malcolm Spellman, and Matthew Mixon. Currently, Jamie Foxx is the only confirmed cast member, with the Oscar winner due to portray the titular antihero. Though Blum has since revealed that “we’re bringing on A-list people. Not just one, but multiple A-list people. And, it’s going to continue to grow.”
While this is merely speculation, it’s possible that Spawn has stalled again due to the release of the much-maligned box office failure, Joker: Folie à Deux. Blum has previously stated his belief that the Joker sequel would prove the popularity of both R-rated comic book movies, with Joker 2 writer Scott Silver behind the latest Spawn rewrite. Considering the response to Joker: Folie à Deux, Blum may now be rethinking things…
