Star Trek: Starfleet Academy has not even aired yet, but there is already a lot of confidence being shown in the new addition to the franchise. Spinning off from Star Trek: Discovery, Starfleet Academy will take place in the 32nd Century and follows a new crew of Starfleet Cadet officers to undergo their training. In addition to a new cast of characters, including Holly Hunter and Paul Giamatti, many recurring Star Trek characters will appear. These names include Mary Wiseman and Tig Notaro as Sylvia Tilly and Jett Reno, respectively, from Star Trek: Discovery and Robert Picardo as the Doctor from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Prodigy.
According to Variety, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy has been renewed for Season 2 ahead of the series debuting. The news was confirmed at New York Comic-Con when executive producer, co-showrunner, and director of Starfleet Academy, Alex Kurtzman, broadcast from a live stream of the series set in Toronto to confirm the news. In addition, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and Orphan Black star Tatiana Maslany is confirmed for a recurring role in Starfleet Academy Season 1, but details on her character are currently being kept under wraps.
Filming is currently underway at Starfleet Academy. No premiere date has been set, but the date would likely be later than 2025, with a 2026 premiere date highly likely. While the idea of making a series set at Starfleet Academy had been explored, and fans got to see a brief glimpse of Kirk’s time there during the Kelvin Timeline of 2009’s Star Trek, this will mark the first Star Trek series dedicated entirely to Starfleet as a central location as opposed to a command ship or space station.
Star Trek’s Future
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy looks to fill a void in the Paramount+ schedule that has opened up following the conclusion of many Star Trek series.Star Trek: Picard ended in 2023, while Star Trek: Prodigy was canceled and then moved to Netflix, where it debuted Season 2 earlier this year. Star Trek: Discovery also concluded earlier in 2024, and now Star Trek: Lower Decks will air its final season starting on October 24, 2024, and conclude on December 19, 2024. Following Lower Deck‘s conclusion, the only Star Trek series on Paramount+ will be Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which is expected to debut in Season 3 sometime in 2025.

More Star Trek is certainly on the way. At San Diego Comic-Con, it was confirmed that Justin Simien and Lower Decks star Tawny Newsome were developing the first live-action Star Trek comedy series. The future certainly looks bright for Star Trek, and being able to attract big-name stars like Holly Hunter, Paul Giamatti, and Tatiana Maslany certainly shows the power of the brand, but also teases that Starfleet Academy is something special to look forward to.
