After the release of the romance drama We Live in Time, Andrew Garfield revealed how he has dealt with the grief of losing his own parent in an interview with Elmo on Sesame Street. In 2019, his mother, Lynn Garfield, passed away due to pancreatic cancer. Garfield went on the kid-orientated show to reflect upon the emotions that formed after Lynn’s death, and how it’s okay to mourn someone you loved.
In a video interview released on Sesame Street’s YouTube channel, Garfield discussed how he had been thinking about his mother as of late. In the emotionally-charged conversation, the actor explains how “It’s actually kind of okay to miss somebody.” He goes on to say that because one is sad and grieving over a lost life, those very feelings are simply proof of the love shared between them. In turn, Garfield can both miss his mother and remember the joy of having her in his life.
“You know, that sadness is kind of a gift. Kind of a lovely thing to feel in a way, because it means that you really loved somebody when you miss them. And when I miss someone, I remember. When I miss my mom, I remember all the cuddles I used to get from her. All the hugs I used to get from her. It makes me feel close to her when I miss her, in a strange sort of way. So, I’m happy to have all the memories of my mom and all the joy she brought me. And, the joy she brought my brother, and my dad, everyone she ever met, everyone around her. So, when I miss her, I remember it’s because she made me so happy. So, I can celebrate her and miss her at the same time.”
An important life lesson kids and adults can alike can learn from, Garfield’s passionate statements are surely welcomed at a time in which it seems hatred thrives more than ever before. The Amazing Spider-Man actor has always been focused on being a positive influence on the world, especially children. It’s hard not to get choked up watching the emotional video collaboration with Elmo, but it’s a helpful reminder that not everything tragic must be seen through a negative lens.
Garfield We Live in Time
Along with Andrew Garfield, We Live in Time stars Florence Pugh in a decades-spanning love story about the enduring aspects of life, even when faced with the ultimate tragedy. Pugh’s character, Almut, gets late-stage ovarian cancer, a shocking diagnosis that much of the film focuses on. However, it is also a celebration of life and a heartwarming romance between Garfield and Pugh fueled by the actors’ unmatched chemistry. Yes, you’ll need tissues by the end of the movie, but there will be plenty of laughs and joy to be had throughout.
