Superman star David Corenswet is putting down the suit and cape for an entirely different genre of film that will likely leave you needing tissues at the theater. The DCU actor has been cast in the lead role in an upcoming biopic about the origins of Mr. Irrelevant, the moniker for the player selected last in the NFL draft. The period piece is based on a true story that follows the enduring life of the game’s most tragic stories.
Deadline reports that Corenswet is to star in Skydance Sports’ Mr. Irrelevant as John Tuggle, who was the last pick in the 1983 NFL draft. Long Shot director Jonathan Levine is set to helm the sports pic, while Reacher showrunner Nick Santora handles screenwriting duties. The film is based on the Mr. Irrelevant name given to those chosen last in the NFL draft, recently made famous by San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy, who is now one of the sports franchise’s lead stars. Of course, the upcoming sports biopic won’t be tackling that player at all, instead following a person whose life story will more than likely tug at the heartstrings.
The true story behind John Tuggle’s journey in the NFL is inspiring but tragic all the same. Selected by the New York Giants in 1983, Tuggle was an NFL running back who had a short-lived career in the league, partially due to external circumstances. He was involved in a car crash that heavily injured him before eventually being diagnosed with cancer and passing away in 1986. Still, despite the physical and mental roadblocks unexpectedly put in front of him, Tuggle persevered and never let his situation affect his desire to play in the NFL and help his teammates succeed.
David Corenswet is Loading Up His Movie Career
After finishing up production on James Gunn’s Superman, Corenswet is putting his newfound muscle and weight gain to good use in Mr. Irrelevant. However, before either project arrives on the big screen, Corenswet has been slowly making his way into relevancy by way of supporting roles. He impressed audiences opposite Mia Goth in Pearl, the middle part of an acclaimed horror trilogy from Ti West. While Corenswet plays a likable character in that one, he also stretched his wings and portrayed one of the human “antagonists” in this year’s Twisters. He’s always had the acting chops to support himself as a lead, but is only now getting the main opportunity to show off his talents on the big screen.

On television, Corenswet has arguably made the most noise. He appeared in the HBO series We Own This City starring Jon Bernthal, while also playing a significant role in Netflix’s The Politician. The actor also had a brief role in House of Cards as Claire Underwood’s boyfriend when she was 20 years old. Corenswet has been at times a blink-and-you-miss-it presence, but it’s safe to say that Superman, and now Mr. Irrelevant, is set to put him on the map for good. As long as he’s great in the roles, of course.
Written and directed by James Gunn, Superman is the first movie in Warner Bros.’ rebooted DC Universe to center around the titular comic book hero. It introduces a new version of the Man of Steel after Henry Cavill’s departure from the role, honoring the character’s roots as “the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way.”
