Eisenberg wrote, directed and stars in , and at a special New York screening of the new film on Oct. 17, he told PEOPLE why “fairy godmother” is the title he gives friend Stone, a producer behind the project.
“I met Emma when we were doing , I think she was 20 years old,” Eisenberg, 41, says about their 2009 horror comedy, which spawned a 2019 sequel. “I remember just thinking, ‘This is, like, the smartest person I’ve ever met.’ She’s so brilliant.”
“She’s an incredible producer,” he adds of Oscar-winner Stone, 35. “It’s hard to describe, because what a producer does is a little bit amorphous, but I’ll just give some examples: She read the script and gave me the best note I got on my script of a thing that I could rewrite. She’s on marketing calls with the movie studio about how to present this movie to the world.”
Eisenberg adds that “we all just kind of sit back and let her, you know, take charge.”

“She’s super bright, she’s passionate as hell and she’s a great friend,” he says. “I feel a bit like she’s my fairy godmother. You know, that she’s given me so many wonderful opportunities in my life.”
In addition to producing behind the scenes of A Real Pain, Stone and her husband produced Eisenberg’s directorial debut, 2022’s When You Finish Saving the World.
During a virtual Q&A at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival, Stone to support her friend’s creative endeavor.
“He’s the most curious person I’ve ever met,” she said at the time. “He studies everyone and asks so many questions. He has a deep empathy to him. I knew that from acting with him, so it just felt like a no-brainer that we’d attempt to work on something with him.”
A Real Pain is about cousins David (Eisenberg) and Benji (Kieran Culkin), who “reunite for a tour through Poland to honor their beloved grandmother,” per a synopsis. The cast also includes Will Sharpe, Jennifer Grey, Kurt Egyiawan, Liza Sadovy and Daniel Oreskes.
A Real Pain is in select theaters Nov. 1.
