The Russo Brothers Have Found Huge Success in Sci-Fi, Action & Fantasy
Speaking to Netflix Tudum, Anthony Russo, who, alongside his brother Joe, has found huge blockbuster success with the likes of the MCU outings Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame, as well as such Netflix movies as Extraction and The Gray Man, revealed what inspired them to adapt the illustrated dystopian novel by Simon Stålenhag.
“The story felt like a fairy tale to us. We really wanted to play into those very elemental aspects of a fairy tale.
We gravitate to ensemble storytelling. Maybe it’s because we come from a large extended Italian-American family. No matter how small a role is, we look at that character as having a very important part in the storytelling, and we like to look at it from that character’s point of view.”

Why Do These Photos From the Russos’ New Movie Starring Chris Pratt Look So Bad?
The Russos Bros.’s next film, The Electric State, got its first look revealed in Vanity Fair, and it looks like a problem many Netflix movies have.
Joe Russo, meanwhile, believes it’s all due to their “steady diet” of all things sci-fi and fantasy.
“We grew up on a steady diet of science-fiction and fantasy. And so our brains are always [there]. Our creative ethos is always attracted to these big, fantastical ideas that can present really interesting themes but also be highly entertaining at the same time.”
The Electric State is scheduled to debut on Netflix on March 14, 2025.
