Principal photography is almost complete on the final season of Stranger Things, and from there the series will head into post-production to add in all the bells and whistles that’s sure to make it one of the most epic conclusions to any TV show we’ve ever seen. Of course, the fear is always there that somehow the finale will be a big miss similar to what happened with Game of Thrones, but according to editor Dean Zimmerman, creators and showrunners Matt and Ross Duffer are determined more than ever to craft an ending that delivers on all that it promises.
Speaking with ScreenRant to promote the physical media release of Deadpool & Wolverine, Zimmerman touched on the final season of Stranger Things, and just how big it is compared to what came before. He revealed that not only will the conclusion feature the same amount of content as Season 4 despite there being one less episode, but that The Duffer Brothers are focused on giving fans the ending they deserve, and not one that falls into the same trappings that Game of Thrones did. Viewers and critics were united in their criticism over the ending to HBO’s epic fantasy series, which went on to largely be panned as one of the worst finales of all-time, earning just 55% on Rotten Tomatoes, the lowest of any season.
“Stranger Things is in full swing, it is bigger than anyone’s going to ever imagine. Every season I am on that show, I don’t think it can get bigger, and always proven wrong. It always just boggles my mind how insanely brilliant the Duffer brothers are [with] coming up with new and crazier ways to do this.
Their whole mission is to stick the landing on this final season where, controversially, a lot of people say Game of Thrones did not
; they don’t want that, and they won’t settle for anything but perfection. So I can assure you that you will not be disappointed, and I can definitely assure you that you will have about the same amount, maybe a little more, content than we did [in] season 4.”
What’s Going to Happen in Stranger Things Season 5?
While plot details remain under wraps for Season 5 of Stranger Things, we at least know that the main cast will be back together again following their split in Season 4, which saw three different story threads take place in Hawkins, California, and Russia. Other than that, mum’s the word when it comes to cast members and creators revealing specific details, but as expected, it’s been an emotional journey for everyone involved, considering the series has consumed almost a decade of their lives.
In an interview with MoveWeb last month, Gates Matarazzo, who’s portrayed Dustin Henderson since the beginning, said that filming the final season of Stranger Things has been both a bittersweet experience, and one that has seen everyone try and hold back tears so that they can complete the final leg of their adventure together.
“I think that’s the greatest challenge is trying to savor every moment, and as we’ve gotten towards the home stretch of filming this, it’s been really hard not to just cry all the time for how much we love the show and each other.”
