Deadpool & Wolverine was the culmination of decades worth of build-up between Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman as the iconic Marvel characters, but it nearly featured an entirely different ending with the death of a major X-Men member. The ending of the record-breaking box office success teased fans with the demise of its titular characters when Deadpool and Wolverine held hands to the tune of “Like a Prayer.” Although both superheroes end up surviving the multiversal romp, the original ending to Deadpool & Wolverine was far more tragic.
Ryan Reynolds posted on Instagram about choosing “Like a Prayer” by Madonna for Deadpool & Wolverine. The actor reveals that the intention behind the song was to accompany the death of Colossus before Wolverine was officially added to the film. Deadpool & Wolverine featured the return of Stefan Kapičić as Colossus, but he only appeared for a brief moment. According to Reynolds, Colossus was meant to lose his life while holding onto Deadpool in the original ending, sending the Merc with a Mouth into a fit of rage and vengeance.
I had Like A Prayer in my head for the 3rd Deadpool film since 2017. Before Wolverine entered the chat, It was largely gonna be the same *single shot, motion-control sequence I’d dreamed of, but my dance partner was originally COLOSSUS — who would have died in the preceding scene, launching Deadpool into a state of pure rage and revenge… all set to [Madonna’s] inspired and singular song, Like A Prayer. Obviously, Hugh joining changed the destiny for everyone. (And Colossus, along with his virginity, stayed intact)
Thankfully, Deadpool & Wolverine does not actually kill off any of the main X-Men characters. As Reynolds alludes to, the sequel went through a lot of changes during the development process, but it’s safe to say most fans would not change a thing about the long-awaited crossover. Killing off the best version of Colossus to hit the big screen was probably never the best idea, even though his death would have been the most emotional moment of the franchise thus far.
Deadpool 3 Ending Was for the Better
During one of the most lackluster years for the genre, Deadpool & Wolverine was the jolt fans of the MCU have been waiting for. Not only is the Deadpool sequel the highest grossing R-rated movie of all time, it boasts a 78% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes as well as a 94% on the audience-based Popcornmeter. It’s a bona fide hit that leaves the door open for Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman’s return to the franchise, presumably until they’re 90.

With both characters still alive at the end of Deadpool & Wolverine, fans already expect them to appear in the next two Avengers films.Secret Wars is almost guaranteed to at least include them as cameos, if not much more significant roles. Heck, there is a decent chance they could be protagonists in the Russo brothers-directed movies after leading one of Marvel’s most successful films since Avengers: Endgame. Hopefully, there is room for Colossus and Deadpool’s other mutant friends down the line, too.
