Andrew Garfield is using his insider information to inform Marvel fans about who the best Spider-Man actor is. Garfield played the character in the Amazing Spider-Man franchise, which was sandwiched between Tobey Maguire’s run in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, and Tom Holland’s ongoing tenure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel Studios spoiled fans in 2021, uniting all three actors on screen as their versions of Peter Parker in Spider-Man: No Way Home. The debate over the best Spider-Man actor has raged on since Garfield took over the role, but the actor has finally weighed in with his opinion on the matter.
Sorry Tom Holland, but you’re third best according to Andrew Garfield. Appearing alongside Florence Pugh in Vanity Fair‘s “Test How Well You Know Each Other” interview series, Garfield was asked the self-incriminating question by his We Live in Time co-star. While many fans love Holland’s rendition of the character, Andrew Garfield exclaimed, “Tobey [Maguire] was my guy!”
Garfield said it had less to do with which one was better, revealing that Tobey Maguire’s performance influenced him as a young actor while he was still in drama school. Garfield continued, “I was in drama school, and I was watching his films as a young impressionable actor and I was like practicing being him.” Not wanting to upset the third member of the official Spider-Man actors group chat (which is apparently a real thing), Andrew Garfield circled back and also praised Tom Holland’s performances in the MCU. He said:
“But I love, I think what Tom has done is incredible as well. Like,
I kind of love them both equally.

Could Andrew Garfield Return as Spider-Man… Again?
Fans thought they’d seen the last of Garfield’s Peter Parker when The Amazing Spider-Man 3 was officially shelved by Sony. The actor then shocked most of the fan base (at least, the side that hadn’t had the reveal spoiled by Tom Holland and various internet leaks) when he reappeared as the web slinger in Spider-Man: No Way Home, alongside his guy, Tobey Maguire. It is now believed that No Way Home is the last we’ll see of Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker.
But, the actor might not be done yet. In a recent interview, Andrew Garfield said he would definitely return as Spider-Man in another movie, so long as the story was good enough. After his cameo in No Way Home, bringing Garfield back a third time could easily feel forced, and lack any emotional resonance. The actor is adamant about avoiding this, and will only play Peter Parker again in the future if Marvel Studios/SONY (or whoever owns the rights next) create a story that makes sense for him to return.
