A Ready or Not sequel has been confirmed with Samara Weaving and filmmakers Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin set to return. Following months of hopeful comments from Weaving and the filmmaking duo (who are known collectively as Radio Silence along with producer Chad Villella), the news was made official during a Ready or Not screening held by Searchlight Pictures in Hollywood on October 12 (via Deadline). The trio were in attendance for a Q&A following the screening.
Premiering in 2019, Ready or Not centered on Weaving’s Grace, a newlywed bride fighting for survival during a lethal game of Hide and Seek against her new husband’s sinister family. The dark comedy horror was a hit: during its theatrical run, it grossed $57.6 globally against a $6 million budget and fared well with critics, who praised the film’s comedic elements, suspenseful horror, and Weaving’s standout performance.
Details surrounding the plot for the second film have not been released, but we know that writers Guy Busick and R. Christopher Murphy have also returned for the upcoming movie. Tripp Vinson, Bradley J. Fischer, William Sherak, and James Vanderbilt will also return for the sequel to serve as producers, with Villella and Tara Farney as executive producers.
The Hype Surrounding Ready or Not 2
While some of the film’s most loyal fans have been hoping for a sequel since 2019, Weaving and Radio Silence’s recent comments definitely implied something was in the works. In April, while promoting this year’s Abigail, Gillett and Bettinelli-Olpin confirmed “an absolute f—ing banger” of a script existed and there was “so much story left to tell.”
“It’s getting figured out. That’s what we’ll say:
Ready or Not 2
is getting figured out. What we
can
say is that there is a script that is an absolute f—ing banger of a sequel. And however it gets made, and in whatever capacity we are helping get it made, we are so excited that it’s happening. That movie is truly the love of our creative lives in a lot of ways.”
In September, while promoting her latest project Azrael, Weaving added fuel to that fire when she said she was “all in” for a sequel:
“I’m all in. I think we’re all in, I don’t know. I think we’re all in…I don’t know if we’ve had our blood handshake, but pretty much. We’ve done the spit handshake, but we haven’t cut each other’s hands and rubbed our blood together.”
The cast and crew are excited, but what are fans saying? Over on Instagram, Searchlight confirmed the upcoming horror with an Instagram post featuring Weaving, Gillett, and Bettinelli-Olpin. The response – as should be anticipated, given the film’s following – was overwhelmingly positive, but some questioned the necessity of a sequel, given the strong conclusion of the original movie. But just because they may not think a Ready or Not 2 is necessary doesn’t mean they won’t watch it. User j.nicholson94 put it best: “Not sure how I feel about this. I don’t think it needs a sequel, but I’m excited to see more of Grace and whatever bloody mayhem this creative has in store this time around.”
Ready or Not, starring Weaving, Adam Brody, Mark O’Brien, Henry Czerny, and Andie MacDowell, is available to stream on Hulu.
