Get ready to pick up the phone once again, as more Ghostbusters movies are coming. According to director Gil Kenan, who helmed this year’s legacy sequel Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, discussions are now happening with Sony Pictures regarding bringing the beloved exterminators back for more adventures on the big screen.
In an interview with The Direct, Kenan confirmed that more movies will happen, with writer, producer, and the son of the original Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman, Jason Reitman, and Kenan himself taking “responsibility” of carrying the flame of the franchise forward for the foreseeable future.
“We definitely are continuing the conversation of telling big Ghostbuster stories on the big screen.
The answer is yes, Jason [Reitman]… we take the responsibility and the joy of being the keepers of the flame of ‘Ghostbusters’ very seriously… we definitely are continuing the conversation of telling big ‘Ghostbuster’ stories on the big screen. And stay tuned. There’ll be more. There’ll be more about that later.”

Long Before the Sequel, Beetlejuice Met the Ghostbusters and It Was Amazing
The Beetlejuice Ghostbusters crossover was a real thing for the attendees of a certain theme park.
Based on the response to Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, the revelation that Kenan and Reitman will continue to steer the world of the Ghostbusters will result in one of two rather divisive reactions. Directed by Gil Kenan, who co-wrote the movie with Jason Reitman, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire stars Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, Celeste O’Connor, and Logan Kim, Kumail Nanjiani, and Patton Oswalt, alongside Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts, and William Atherton, and finds the titular team heading back to New York City. But when the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes an evil force, Ghostbusters new and old must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a second Ice Age.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire was met with seriously mixed reviews from critics, standing at a “rotten” 42% on Rotten Tomatoes. In stark contrast, audiences loved the follow-up, with the movie reaching heights of 852% on the Popcornmeter. So, if you’re a critic, you’re likely letting out a disappointed sigh at this update from Kenan, while general audiences will no doubt be cheering.
Netflix’s Ghostbusters Animated Series Will ‘Intersect’ With the Stories We Love
Not only will the Ghostbusters franchise continue on the big screen, they will also make their way to the small screen in an animated series set to debut on Netflix. While details of the project remain under wraps, Kenan reveals that the show will “intersect with the Ghostbusters stories” that we all know and love. Which, again, could be seen as either good news or bad news depending on how you feel about this modern iteration.
“And I’ve spoken recently about the fact that we are in very active development on our animated series that we’re producing with Netflix. That is something that I’m actively involved with, Jason on a day-to-day basis right now, we are really excited about the stories that are starting to be told there, and the way that it intersects with the Ghostbusters stories that you and I love is going to be thrilling for our audiences.”
