One of the most successful horror franchises of all time is The Conjuring universe. And we finally have our first look at the upcoming final installment. The Conjuring universe first got its start with 2013’s The Conjuring, and after that was a hit, it continued to grow. Spin-offs from the franchise include Annabelle and The Nun, and the universe looks like it has no signs of slowing down. A big part of the appeal is the chemistry between stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga who portray Ed and Lorrain Warren respectively. While the real-life Warrens were controversial figures, the same can’t be said of the on-screen version.
The duo are all set to return for the fourth and final installment with 2025’s The Conjuring: Last Rites. Each of the films have tackled real cases, but we don’t yet know what direction this one is taking us. What we do know is Wilson’s iconic sideburns are making a return, and we can get our first look at them through the first set of behind-the-scenes photos posted by a Conjuring fan page on Instagram. You can check out this first look at The Conjuring: Last Rites below.
It’s expected the fourth entry in The Conjuring franchise will be the last one, but when it comes to long-running franchises like this, you can never truly say never. Warner Bros. doesn’t have many successful tentpoles to rely on, and when such surefire hits like Joker: Folie a Deux underperform critically and at the box office, it becomes less and less likely that the studio will leave a successful series like The Conjuring on the shelf forever.
Where Does the Conjuring Go From Here?
The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It was delayed from its initial 2020 release due to COVID, and when it did come out it did so as a simultaneous release on HBO Max and theaters. Despite that, it managed to gross over $200 million at the box office on a budget of $39 million, meaning it was still a highly profitable film that people still went to the theaters to see. Even the spin-offs have been massively successful at the box office. The Nun 2 released back in 2023 and grossed $269.5 million on a $38.5 million budget. It’s difficult to see the franchise winding down even if both Wilson and Farmiga depart.

If there’s one thing that’s certain to strike fear in the hearts of moviegoers, it’s a story about a demonic doll allegedly based on a true story.
The synopsis for The Conjuring 4 reads “paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren take on one last terrifying case involving mysterious entities they must confront,” meaning it’s heavily implied this will be the last ride for the two actors. As we’ve seen with the two Nun films and three Annabelle movies, the series is still successful outside the mainline entries. The box office success indicates audiences aren’t tired of The Conjuring universe yet, so as long as the team keeps coming up with new ideas, people will keep on checking out what the series has to offer.
Michael Chaves returns as the director for The Conjuring 4. He previously served as the director for The Curse of La Llarona, The Conjuring 3, and The Nun 2, the latter two being part of the larger Conjuring universe. The Conjuring: Last Rites is due to be released on September 5, 2025.
