The world has been waiting for this moment since Kate Middleton announced her cancer diagnosis on March 22, 2024: As of today, September 9, 2024, the Princess of Wales has completed chemotherapy and is now “doing what I can to stay cancer free,” she said in a moving new mini film just posted on Instagram. In the video, complete with Super 8 and regular footage of Kate, Prince William, their three children, and her parents enjoying a day outdoors on their estate, Kate shared how her cancer journey has changed her life—and her and Prince William’s relationship.
As the royal emerges from this painful time, Kate reiterated how challenging the past year has been for her and her family. “As the summer comes to an end, I cannot tell you what a relief it is to have finally completed my chemotherapy treatment. The last nine months have been incredibly tough for us as a family,” she said in the vulnerable video’s voiceover. “Life as you know it can change in an instant and we have had to find a way to navigate the stormy waters and road unknown.”
Navigating the unknown, however, caused William and Kate to reflect upon and recenter the things that matter—the bond they share with each other and their children. And the video, which shows the couple holding each other, walking hand-in-hand, and kissing, is proof that their relationship is stronger than ever. “The cancer journey is complex, scary, and unpredictable for everyone, especially those closest to you. With humility, it also brings you face to face with your own vulnerabilities in a way you have never considered before, and with that, a new perspective on everything,” shared Kate. “This time has above all reminded William and me to reflect and be grateful for the simple yet important things in life, which so many of us often take for granted. Of simply loving and being loved.”
Though Kate remained largely out of the public eye for the duration of her treatment, she is looking forward to resuming her front-facing royal responsibilities now that her health has improved. “I am however looking forward to being back at work and undertaking a few more public engagements in the coming months when I can,” she said. “Despite all that has gone before I enter this new phase of recovery with a renewed sense of hope and appreciation of life.”
The princess concluded the film by expressing her and William’s shared gratitude for the public’s love and support—and affirming that she and her husband are thinking of everyone still fighting cancer. “William and I are so grateful for the support we have received and have drawn great strength from all those who are helping us at this time. Everyone’s kindness, empathy, and compassion has been truly humbling. To all those who are continuing their own cancer journey—I remain with you, side by side, hand in hand. Out of darkness, can come light so let that light shine bright.”
