The Flash ended with its ninth season in mid-2023, but not everyone loved the CW’s final farewell for Grant Gustin’s hero. Truthfully, there is only so much a small-screen adaptation can do to create a faithful version of the Flash, and yet it felt like there was a better conclusion out here somewhere. To answer that question, a diehard fan of The Flash has reimagined a new ending for the beloved Scarlet Speedster, one that gives Gustin a chance to shine on the big screen.
Fans creating trailers featuring CW’s Flash and adjacent is nothing new, and there are some particularly good ones already online. However, this latest one gives us a glimpse into what could’ve been, and honestly, should’ve happened, especially since Ezra Miller’s The Flash wasn’t exactly a showstopper. Titled Final Run, Youtuber Julian Bell packs in fan-favorite characters and sets up a blockbuster conclusion for The Flash.
The edited footage teases a new version of the Flashpoint timeline, revamping the short-lived storyline from The Flash’s third season. It also features cameo appearances by other superheroes, including Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman, who leads the final season of Superman & Lois this fall.
The Flash Gets One Final Run
Although The Flash was able to end on its own terms with a ninth and final season, it left some loose ends untouched and quickly explained away the show’s biggest questions. Reverse Flash was finally defeated for good, giving Barry Allen the long-awaited victory fans had been waiting on for a decade. However, other villains get wiped away too quickly, and Barry’s disappearance does not get enough explanation. It’s not a terrible ending to a show that fans had a love-hate relationship with, but it could have been better.
It’s hard to say it was a satisfying finale longtime fans had envisioned for the series, especially since Arrow had a great conclusion after starting the Arrowverse all those years ago. Of course, there is an argument to be made that The Flash ran its course in the last few seasons and overstayed its welcome. However, no matter how many episodes were aired, culminating Grant Gustin’s journey as the speedster would have been most satisfying on the big screen. The show always felt like it had to cut corners to fulfill the CG-heavy nature of his powers and his rogues’ gallery, but a film (or even a TV movie) would have been able to make fans’ dreams come true.
2023’s The Flash is not bad by any means, it’s just hard to replicate the feeling of spending years with Gustin’s version of the character.
