Creed guitarist Mark Tremonti recently shared the stories of the five top songs of the band with Guitar Player.
When the guitarist mentioned the band’s 1999 track, ‘Higher,’ he clarified that they were more than just one-hit wonders and this song was proof of it.
“Everybody had been saying we were one-hit-wonders, and we’d have a sophomore slump, so when we heard that song, we were like, ‘This is our protection against the sophomore slump.’ We hoped for good traction, and we got it,” he explained. “I remember going into a furniture store after buying my first house and hearing ‘Higher’ on the radio for the first time. The DJ was very complimentary; I was like, ‘All right! Looks like I’m gonna be able to pay for this furniture!’”
‘Higher’ is among the hit songs Creed has made over the years. The drummer Scott Phillips recalled the making of the music video and admitted to finding it weird the first time they were working on the video.
“I remember the treatment for that from the director. It was very ‘Matrix,’ which was the big movie at that moment,” the drummer explained. “I had watched a bunch of behind the scenes footage of ‘The Matrix’ so got to see the way they did it compared to the way we did it – we literally just had to freeze there! And then you go back and watch that video and even knowing the way we made it, I’m a huge fan of it.”
Phillips also acknowledged how crucial music videos were in helping Creed become a massive band in the early 2000s.
Creed’s ‘Higher’ has previously appeared on the Hard Rock Streaming Songs chart, reaching a peak of No. 19 in February of this year. In August, the single returned to the chart at No. 23, near the bottom of the 25-spot tally. It has made six appearances on TheShockNews so far.
