The Amazing Spider-Man star (and expert liar) Andrew Garfield answers whether he would ever return to the role of Marvel’s iconic web-slinger. The actor made a semi-surprising but totally crowd-pleasing comeback in the MCU’s multiverse-spanning Spider-Man: No Way Home back in 2021, and Garfield has now said he would “100 percent come back” for the right Spidey project.
In a new interview with Esquire, Garfield says that once again donning the red-and-blue spandex for the MCU outing was “really healing” after the planned Amazing Spider-Man 3 fell through, and he would absolutely do it again if it was right for the character and the comic book movie culture.
“For sure, I would 100 percent come back if it was the right thing, if it’s additive to the culture, if there’s a great concept or something that hasn’t been done before that’s unique and odd and exciting and that you can sink your teeth into. I love that character, and it brings joy. If part of what I bring is joy, then I’m joyful in return.”
While 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man and its sequel, 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2,were not particularly well-received by either critics or audiences, Andrew Garfield is considered by many fans to be the best iteration of the character on the big screen. The actor was able to demonstrate his charm in No Way Home, in which he starred alongside fellow Spider-Men Tobey Maguire and Tom Holland.
Could Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man Appear in Avengers: Secret Wars?
So, Andrew Garfield wants to return as Spider-Man, does he? Well, the perfect opportunity to do so may very well present itself as the MCU wraps up the Multiverse Saga in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. The blockbuster sequels are set for release in 2026 and 2027 respectively, with fans fully expecting the latter movie to be just as brimming with crowd-pleasing cameos as this year’s hugely successful Deadpool & Wolverine. Perhaps even more so.
Now that we know Garfield is interested in web-swinging again, and knowing how good the actor is at keeping things close to his chest, his desire to return is sure to have the tongues of every Marvel fan wagging. Could we see the trio of Spider-Men share the screen again? Or will Garfield be the Peter Parker of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe? Perhaps a meeting between Garfield’s Spidey and Hugh Jackman’s Logan? With the multiverse of madness, any amount of fan service is entirely possible.
Following the MCU reboot of The Amazing Spider-Man, the main Spider-Man franchise is now led by Tom Holland, who is all set to return for a fourth solo outing. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Ring’sDestin Daniel Cretton has now been tapped to direct, with the likes of Zendaya expected to return alongside Holland.
As for Andrew Garfield, the actor is now back after taking a break, and can next be seen starring alongside Florence Pugh in the acclaimed romantic drama We Live in Time which is scheduled for a limited theatrical release in the United States on 11 October 2024.
