Samuel L. Jackson has had some kick-ass moments as Nick Fury in the MCU, but the beloved actor has finally named his favorite scene. It could be argued that Nick Fury’s appearance in the post-credits scene of Iron Man is responsible for birthing the entire MCU. In Phase 1, Fury and his S.H.I.E.L.D colleague Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) were an interwoven pairing and were responsible for assembling Tony Stark, Thor, Captain America, Hulk, Black Widow, and Hawkeye for the first Avengers movie. While Fury has long been a supporting character in the MCU (apart from Secret Invasion, but we don’t talk about Secret Invasion), the character has had a few, memorable moments to shine.
Whilst reflecting on his career with GQ, Samuel L. Jackon pinpointed Nick Fury’s coolest moment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Jackson said the scene came in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Whilst driving, Nick Fury is apprehended by the police under orders from S.H.I.E.L.D (Hydra). After shooting his way through the chase, Fury comes face to face with the Winter Soldier, and resorts to desperate measures to escape. Jackson explained:
“My favorite Nick Fury moment is Winter Soldier, when he’s in that car. I mean, that’s, like, quintessential Nick Fury. No Panic. Just cool. Figure it out. Make the next move, make the next move, make the next move. Badass. Badass sh*t.”
While Nick Fury has had some very cool scenes in the MCU, there’s one thing that Samuel L. Jackson has wanted the character to do for some years now; go to Wakanda. Jackson explained:
“All of us were doing that. It was like, all the black people in the Marvel universe were trying to figure out, ‘Why can’t we go to Wakanda?’ It was me, Don [Cheadle], Anthony Mackie. But they made it. They got to go fight. I still didn’t get there.”
What Next for Nick Fury in the MCU?
Nick Fury made his most recent MCU appearance in The Marvels. Following the movie, Fury is still alive and (mostly) well in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Like almost every Marvel hero that has ever appeared on-screen, Fury is expected to appear in Avengers: Secret Wars. But it wouldn’t be an Avengers film without Nick Fury in some capacity, so it is likely that Fury will also appear in Avengers: Doomsday, which is releasing the year prior.
As for the MCU’s upcoming slate, the franchise has two major movies being released next year. Firstly, Captain America: Brave New World will hit theaters on February 14, 2025. The movie sees Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) embrace the mantel of Captain America as he faces off against the Serpent Society. In May, Marvel Studios will be releasing their new off-brand Avengers, Thunderbolts*. The team comprises the MCU’s anti-heroes, almost like Marvel’s equivalent of DC’s Suicide Squad. Nick Fury hasn’t been confirmed to appear in either film. However, both movies fit the tone of a Marvel film that Fury could appear in.
