Deadpool & Wolverine has grossed $1.31 billion at the worldwide box office, has become the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, and just recently passed The Avengers to become the fifth highest-grossing MCU movie at the domestic box office. Now it has eyes set on taking over the awards season. Deadpool & Wolverine was the only MCU film released in 2024, and after a rough 2023, it seemed to turn the public perception of the franchise around for many people.
From Deadpool doing the “Bye Bye Bye” dance to Channing Tatum as Gambit delivering the incredible line that fans like to spell out as one word, “Wooimbouttamakeanameformyselfere,”Deadpool & Wolverine has become one of the most talked about movies of the year, and Disney is hoping that can translate to some possible awards buzz.
According to Variety, Disney will be taking out an awards campaign for Deadpool & Wolverine. They are submitting the movie at the Golden Globes in the comedy categories, including Best Actor for Ryan Reynolds and Best Supporting Actor for Hugh Jackman. Disney will also submit and campaign Jackman in Supporting Actor for several awards, including the Screen Actors Guild Awards, Critics’ Choice, and The Academy Awards. Disney hopes that Deadpool & Wolverine will be locked for the Best Comedy or Musical Category Golden Globe nomination, as 2016’s Deadpool scored a nomination in the same category. Deadpool & Wolverine will also look to submit nominations, primarily for technical categories like visual effects and production design.
Deadpool & Wolverine’s Award Chances
Given that the Golden Globes have two separate categories for Best Picture, it is not hard to imagine Deadpool & Wolverine landing a nomination, but a win is a different story as there will likely be many high-profile movies competing, including Jason Reitman’s Saturday Night, the upcoming Y2K and possibly even Richard Linklater’s Hit Man. Because of the rules of mixing comedies and musicals, Deadpool & Wolverine could find itself facing off against Wicked or Joker: Folie à Deux. The first Deadpool notably lost the Golden Globe to La La Land, a clear sign of the issue putting musicals and comedies into the same category and just one of many controversies that surrounds the award show.
It is standard practice for studios to take out For Your Consideration campaigns for their feature films, hoping they can get a nomination in any category for their movies. It is unlikely that Deadpool & Wolverine will land a Best Picture nomination at the Academy Awards, given the film’s mixed but still positive critical reaction, and so far, the only MCU movie to earn a Best Picture nomination is Black Panther. The Black Panther movies are the only MCU movies to earn nominations in non-technical categories at the Oscars, as Angela Bassett’s Best Supporting Actress nomination for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever made her the first actor in an MCU to land an Oscar nomination.
While fans would like to see Hugh Jackman get some recognition for his role as Wolverine, possibly even as a career win, the competition in the Supporting Actor race is heating up as both Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor will be submitted for Challengers, Dennis Quaid is gaining attention for his role in The Substance, and early word of mouth for A Real Pain has Kieran Culkin as a name to watch out for.
