Pierre Morel, the director behind the huge action movie hit Taken which transformed Oscar nominee Liam Neeson into a bona fide action hero, returns to the genre with the new trailer for the Amazon Prime Video action thriller Canary Black (2024). If the Taken filmmaker’s involvement is not enough to excite you, then perhaps the fact that the movie stars Underworld star Kate Beckinsale, Hitman: Agent 47 star Rupert Friend, and the late, great Punisher: War Zone star Ray Stevenson will achieve the desired effect.

Directed by Pierre Morel and written by Matthew Kennedy, Canary Black sounds like the perfect no-nonsense action spy thriller, with Kate Beckinsale leading the movie as a CIA agent on the run. Beckinsale, Rupert Friend, and Ray Stevenson are joined by the likes of Saffron Burrows (The Bank Job), Ben Miles (Andor), Goran Kostić (Taken), Michael Brandon (Episodes), and Charles Nishikawa (Touch). Alongside the trailer, you can check out the official synopsis for Canary Black below.
“A top CIA operative, Avery Graves, is blackmailed by terrorists into betraying her own country to save her kidnapped husband. Cut off from her team, she turns to her underworld contacts to survive and help locate the coveted intelligence that the kidnappers want. Betrayed at every turn, she must rely on her cutting-edge training and primitive fighting skills in a deadly race to deliver a ransom that could trigger a global crisis.”
Producer John Zois gave the following statement when the project was first announced, praising director Pierre Morel and lead star Kate Beckinsale. He said at the time, “Anton is thrilled to bring action master, Pierre Morel, together with Kate Beckinsale who broke the mold of the action hero in the Underworld franchise. They both continue to up their games and push the genre today.“
Canary Black Is One of Ray Stevenson’s Final Roles
Canary Black marks one of the final movies of actor Ray Stevenson, who sadly passed away on 21 May 2023, aged 58. While no cause of death was released at the time, Stevenson’s partner, Elisabetta Carracia, has since revealed that his passing was due to ongoing heart problems. Best known for his roles as Frank Castle in Punisher: War Zone, Volstagg in the MCU Thor movies, the television series Rome, the crime drama Kill the Irishman, the action franchise Accident Man, and more, Ray Stevenson most recently starred as the fan-favorite former Jedi in the Star Wars series Ahsoka, for which he was met with much acclaim.
His final movie role will see him starring alongside Jeremy Neumark Jones, Neil Stuke, Bold Choimbol, Genevieve Chenneour, Michael Ironside, Eric Roberts, and David Schofield in the historical action movie 1242: Gateway to the West. Directed by Péter Soós and co-written by Aron Horvath and Joan Lane, 1242: Gateway to the West will take audiences back in time to when Genghis Khan’s army invades Europe. However, the war machine does not expect that a Hungarian castle, a canon, and a Priest will stop it.
