A lot has been made about the quick turnaround of some movies, from their theatrical release to their availability for home viewing via PVOD. Some films are thriving in theaters, generating as many box office dollars before being sent for home viewing. Meanwhile, others have a stagnant box office footprint, so the next best option is to see if the movie can find an audience from those more comfortable checking out the film within the confines of their house. In the case of Blink Twice, the feature directorial debut of actress Zoë Kravitz, the movie only did modest business compared to its budget, but it looks like it is finding an audience after arriving on PVOD.
Per IndieWire, Blink Twice debuted at number one during its first week of availability on PVOD. The film debuted in theaters back in August in fourth place during its opening weekend with a gross of $7 million, so, in terms of placement, its PVOD debut is so far outshining its theatrical arrival. Despite its modest box office run, the film will actually turn a profit when it’s all said and done, thanks to its slim $20 million budget. To date, the film has grossed $22.7 million domestically and $67.8 million worldwide.
Blink Twice and Zoë Kravitz Scored With Critics
Directed by Kravitz from a screenplay she co-wrote with E.T. Feigenbaum, Blink Twice follows a group of people who are invited to the private island of a tech billionaire named Slater King (Channing Tatum). While everything appears to be paradise at first glance, strange things begin to happen on the island, specifically to all the women who happen to be attendees. In addition to Tatum, the film also stars Naomi Ackie, Christian Slater, Adria Arjona, Simon Rex, Haley Joel Osment, Kyle MacLachlan, Geena Davis and Alie Shawkat.
Even though late August releases sometimes signal a film being dumped by a studio and hoping for the best, Amazon MGM Studios scored creatively with Kravitz’s feature directorial debut. The movie registered a 74 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes with a consensus that reads, “A bold and memorable debut that thrusts Zoë Kravitz into the turf of directors to watch, Blink Twice is a live wire of a film.” The movie received positive reactions to Kravitz’s visual flourishes, ability to sustain tension, and the performances of its ensemble cast, particularly Tatum, Ackie, and Arjona. The film also garnered attention after Amazon issued a trigger warning for the movie on X because of its “mature themes and depictions of violence, including sexual violence.”
