WAPAKONETA, OH (WLIO) – It’s a community that has been tied to the moon since 1969, but this weekend it gets to shine because of the sun. Wapakoneta, along with hundreds of other cities and towns in the totality path of the upcoming solar eclipse, are putting their best foot forward for the celestial event.
In Wapak, most stores are having extended hours and special sales of solar eclipse merchandise. The downtown was bustling Saturday afternoon as both locals and visitors were taking advantage of the good weather, the shopping, and the good food. Some people were just passing through for the day and others staying through Monday for the big event, and for some, this is not their first total solar eclipse.
Sharon Naderman made a pact with a friend to see another eclipse, “So we were at the epicenter of the one in 2017 near Hopkinsville, Kentucky, and this time we got as close to the center line that we could at the time that we made the reservations last October.”
Rose Wurm from Pennsylvania said she would meet Naderman in 2024, “That’s where we met, and we made a pact that we would try and get together in 7 years for this eclipse in 2024. So here we are. We’re tent camping at Indian Lake State Park.”
Both women say they are making the pact to meet again for the 2044 solar eclipse on August 23rd, somewhere in the Dakotas or Montana.
