One of the year’s scariest horror movies is all set to land on the streaming platform Shudder next week. And it could make for a wonderfully terrifying cinematic experience this spooky season. Titled Oddity, the horror flick will be available to stream from Friday, September 27. The movie made waves when it premiered at South by Southwest (SXSW) back in March, winning the 2024 SXSW Film & TV Festival Audience Award in the Midnighter section. This tale of a vengeful psychic, who uses cursed objects to track down her twin sister’s killer, has made an impression on audiences and critics so far, and it could make an impression on you this Halloween…if you’re feeling brave enough to watch.
Written and directed by Damian Mc Carthy, Oddity stars Gwilym Lee, Carolyn Bracken, Tadhg Murphy, Caroline Menton, Steve Wall, and Jonathan French. You can check out the official synopsis for the horror outing below.
“When Dani is brutally murdered at the remote country house that she and her husband Ted are renovating, everyone suspects a patient from the local mental health institution, where Ted is a doctor. However, soon after the tragic killing, the suspect is found dead.
A year later, Dani’s blind twin sister Darcy, a self-proclaimed psychic and collector of cursed items, pays an unexpected visit to Ted and his new girlfriend, Yana. Convinced that there was more to her sister’s murder than people know, Darcy has brought with her the most dangerous items from her cursed collection to help her exact revenge.”
This Year Has Been Killer for Horror Fans
Oddity was met with critical acclaim upon release, and is now “Certified Fresh” with a near-perfect rating of 97% on the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes. MovieWeb’s own Will Sayre heaped praise on the movie and loved that the story “Keeps You Guessing at Every Strange Turn.”
“It’s a wild tale that showcases the vast talents of Irish actress Carolyn Bracken (star of the Oscar-nominated The Quiet Girl) as twin sisters, one of whom meets her fate too darn early and thus kickstarts a wild ride that will tickle the fancies of horror-thriller fans everywhere.”
Collider’s Chase Hutchinson, meanwhile, commended Oddity for being “genuinely scary as it is darkly funny” and calling the movie nothing less than “A Supernatural Horror That Will Tear You To Pieces.”
“Remaining aware of genre enough to playfully skewer it just as it manages to be truly terrifying in an almost classical sense, it is the type of film that grows on you. When the bottom drops out from under it, you feel every moment of the fall.”
Horror movie fans are laughing (in hell) this year, as 2024 has brought with it all manner of critically acclaimed and suitably frightening delights. So far this year, audiences have hidden behind their fingers while watching the likes of the acclaimed Late Night with the Devil, the serial killer thriller Strange Darling, the pop culture phenomenon Longlegs starring Maika Monroe and Nicolas Cage, the body horror tale The Substance, the apocalyptic prequel A Quiet Place: Day One, and Speak No Evil, which star James McAvoy as a terrifying toxic villain. And the year’s not over yet, as the rest of 2024 delivers the action horror movie Azrael on Sept. 27, gory follow-up Terrifier 3 on Oct. 11, sinister sequel Smile 2 on Oct. 18, Heretic starring Hugh Grant on Nov. 8, and director Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu on Dec. 25.
