Get your knife and fork ready, as we now have a new look at the upcoming Netflix dystopian thriller sequel The Platform 2, courtesy of Netflix Geeked Week. A follow-up to one of the biggest hits on the streaming platform, The Platform 2 will once again take audiences to a place that many likely do not want to go, as we return to the so-called “Vertical Self-Management Center,” a prison that finds residents living on different levels of a giant tower where a platform full of food slowly makes its way from top to bottom.
You can check out the newly released clip and the official synopsis for The Platform 2 below.
“As a mysterious leader imposes their rule in the Platform, a new resident becomes embroiled in the battle against this controversial method to fight the brutal feeding system. But when eating from the wrong plate becomes a death sentence, how far would you be willing to go to save your life?”
The Platform director Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia returns to helm the sequel, which will introduce a new cast of unlucky characters played by Milena Smit (The Snow Girl), Hovik Keuchkerian (Money Heist), Natalia Tena (Game of Thrones), and Óscar Jaenada (Luis Miguel: The Series) who find themselves trapped and at the mercy of the titular platform.
The Platform Was a Huge Hit for Netflix
Released back in 2020, the first The Platform was directed by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia from a screenplay by David Desola and Pedro Rivero. The thriller was met with critical acclaim upon release and now stands at a delicious and “Certified Fresh” rating of 81% on the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes. Not only did critics enjoy this sharp satirical bite, the thriller was also a big hit with audiences, being watched by 56 million households in its first four weeks of release and garnering 82.8 million views overall.
The first Platform still stands as one of the most-watched original movies ever on Netflix, as well as one of the most popular “Non-English” movies ever released on the streaming platform. The Platform finds itself at number five on the Top 10 list, with other heavy hitters including the monster movie Troll, which is set in Norway and follows a fearless paleontologist who must stop an awakened troll from wreaking deadly havoc; shark feature Under Paris, which finds the capital city suffering a bloodbath when a giant shark appears in the Seine; the survival drama Society of the Snow, which tells the true story of a plane crash in the remote heart of the Andes; and Nowhere, which follows a pregnant woman who finds herself drifting alone in the sea after fleeing a devastated totalitarian country.
The Platform 2
has been selected to debut at the “Culinary Zinema” section of the 72nd San Sebastián International Film Festival, which takes place from Friday September 20 to Saturday September 28. The thriller will then land on Netflix on October 4.
