As the anticipation for the upcoming Peaky Blinders film grows, Steven Knight, the creator, screenwriter and producer behind the project, has promised that the cast is going to be “mindblowing.” Knight also revealed our first insight into the setting of the sequel, however, he remains tight-lipped about the key details such as the release date, plot, and additional cast members. As revealed in August 2024, Rebecca Ferguson and Barry Keoghan will join Cillian Murphy in the principal cast of the Peaky Blinders film, and now, speaking at the RTS London Convention (via Deadline), Knight discussed the new cast members and teased more announcements coming shortly. He said:
“We’ve announced Rebecca Ferguson, we’ve announced Barry Keoghan, we’ve got some more announcements coming. It’s set in the Second World War, and it’s really good.”
Just the inclusion of the two aforementioned cast members is enough to describe the film’s ensemble as mindblowing, since they have been in numerous prominent films and TV shows over the years. While Rebecca Ferguson is best recognized for her role in the Mission: Impossible franchise, Barry Keoghan is an Oscar-nominated actor who has played Dominic Kearney in The Banshees of Inisherin, Martin in The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Lt. Curtis Biddick in Masters of the Air, and appeared briefly as the Joker in The Batman. A role he is expected to reprise in the upcoming sequel.
While additional cast members may not yet have been announced, we should be enthusiastic about what the upcoming Peaky Blinders film has to offer. Especially if it intends to live up to the iconic TV series’ immense reputation, which spanned six seasons and won multiple accolades throughout its run.
The Peaky Blinders Film Will Debut on Netflix
Steven Knight is currently developing the Peaky Blinders film, which will be directed by Tom Harper (Heart of Stone and War & Peace). While this may be his most interesting update on the production thus far, the screenwriter has previously shared other details, ranging from the script’s progress to the return of actors and characters from season’s past, who would be integral to the film’s plot.
In a more recent conversation, Knight divulged details regarding the project, claiming that they are setting up television studios in Digbeth and would begin filming in September 2024. Having said that, the film’s creator is hesitant to share additional details about almost everything, so as not to spoil the fun, especially for the fans of the original TV show. However, we do have a vague idea of where the story will go next. Netflix describes the project as follows:
“The film will be an epic continuation of the multi-award-winning, six-season gangster saga. Set in Birmingham between 1919 and 1934, Peaky Blinders followed the rise (and sometimes fall) of the Shelby family as they navigated a world wracked with radical social, economic, and political change. The last time we saw Tommy Shelby in the Season 6 finale, he was riding off on a white horse, intent on starting a new life. What does the new movie hold in store for him?”
While this synopsis does not necessarily give context for the upcoming film, it does pave the path for fans to create their own hypotheses. So, are you thrilled about the return of Thomas Shelby in the Peaky Blinders film?
