Den of Thieves Was a Big Hit with Action Movie Fans
Directed by Christian Gudegast, the first Den of Thieves follows Butler’s “Big Nick” O’Brien, a hard-drinking, hard-fighting leader of the Regulators, an elite unit of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Meanwhile, Ray Merrimen (Pablo Schreiber) is the recently paroled leader of the Outlaws, a gang of ex-military men who use their expertise and tactical skills to evade the law. O’Brien, Merrimen, and their crews soon find themselves on a direct collision course as the criminals hatch an elaborate plan for a seemingly impossible heist involving the city’s Federal Reserve Bank.
While met with a mixed response from critics (and currently sports a big, green splat next to score of 41% on Rotten Tomatoes), Den of Thieves was a big hit with audiences and action movie fans, earning a worldwide total of $80.5 million against a production budget of $30 million. Thanks to a gloriously gruff turn from Butler as well as explosive, white-knuckle action sequences, fans are eager to return to the dangerous world of Den of Thieves.
