A24’s upcoming sports movie starring Timothée Chalamet adds Grammy-winning artist Tyler, the Creator to the star-studded cast. Uncut Gems‘ Josh Safdie directs the ping pong-based film, which will mark Tyler’s feature film debut as an actor. The rapper-singer adds intrigue to an already exciting project, helmed by a filmmaker that revels in hiring first-time actors in major roles.
Per Variety, A24’s Marty Supreme by Josh Safdie adds Tyler, the Creator to the main cast alongside Timothée Chalamet and Gwyneth Paltrow. Written by Safdie and Ronald Bronstein, the unconventional sports movie follows a fictional version of professional ping pong player Marty Reisman, who started his career as a hustler before becoming a world champion, winning 22 major ping pong titles from 1946 to 2002. Details are scarce surrounding the project, but it marks director Josh Safdie’s first feature film effort without brother Benny Safdie, another gifted filmmaker. Suffice it so say it’s exactly what one should expect from the mind behind Uncut Gems. In July, A24 posted on their X/Twitter account the first teaser image for Marty Supreme.
Tyler, the Creator is one of three cast members officially announced for the film, which also includes Gwyneth Paltrow. After a brief acting hiatus, Paltrow returns to the big screen for the first time since Avengers: Endgame. She had previously starred in the Netflix series The Politician from 2019-2020, but she will now make her on-screen presence known once again in Marty Supreme. At one point, she had said maybe Robert Downey Jr. could get her back to acting, but it seems A24’s Marty Supreme was the project meant to be.
Tyler, the Creator Adds Actor to Musician Title
It’s unclear how significant Tyler, the Creator’s role in Marty Supreme is, but it will be new territory for the uber-talented musical artist and fashion designer. In addition to winning Grammys for his acclaimed albums, he’s provided original music for several projects, including the theme song for the 2018 animated film The Grinch. However, his acting resume is limited at best, most previously voicing Jesus on Netflix’s Big Mouth in Season 6. He starred in a sketch comedy series titled Lioter Squad, in which his comedic chops were on full display. Despite the lack of professional acting credits, it’s clear that Tyler has more to show off, and Marty Supreme could be his breakout acting role.
Assuming Tyler, the Creator’s role is big enough, A24’s Marty Supreme is the type of project that just seems right up his alley. Josh Safdie is no stranger to working with non-actors in major roles, famously casting former NBA superstar Kevin Garnett in a meaty part in Uncut Gems. The former Boston Celtic player pulls off an incredibly impressive performance, one that plays perfectly opposite Adam Sandler. Like Garnett, Tyler, the Creator has a big personality that is instantly recognizable, so it’s fair to assume Safdie can at the very least draw from that in Marty Supreme.
