Demi Moore shares three daughters — Rumer, 36, Scout, 33, and Tallulah, 30 — with her ex-husband Bruce Willis
is eagerly anticipating her daughters’ reactions to her provocative new film.
While speaking with PEOPLE at the 2024 about , Moore, 61, says her three daughters — , 36, , 33, and , 30 — have not yet seen her body horror satire co-starring .
“I thought about setting it up for them to see it, but then decided to wait,” Moore says. “They can see it with the big audience at the premiere — it would be more exciting and more fun. I mean, they’ve seen the trailers, but they are super excited.”
Moore stars in The Substance, which arrived in Toronto months after winning the best screenplay award at the in May, as actress Elizabeth Sparkle, who is cast aside by the television network she has long worked for in favor of younger talent. When she discovers an illicit drug known as The Substance, Elizabeth starts sharing a life with a younger version of herself (Qualley, 29) and recklessly tries to reclaim her youth and fame.

The movie tackles prominent issues related to body image, society’s expectations on women and aging — all of which Moore says she and her daughters have spoken about over the years. “They of course have heard me say this before,” she says. “I think looking at the circumstances, which is creating this kind of societal conditioning of women’s value, basically fading as they age is kind of our setup.”

“What I really was moved by, this is not what was happening to her from the outside, but what Elizabeth was doing to herself,” she adds of her character’s journey in the film, written and directed by Coralie Fargeat, who made the 2017 feminist thriller Revenge. “That idea that she was placing so much more of the prize on fame and fortune than on inner peace and personal growth.”
Moore shares her daughters with ex-husband . All three of her chilren have followed her and Willis’ footsteps into acting to various degrees. In the past, Rumer has spoken about , a pertinent theme in The Substance.

“We spoke with somebody yesterday [who] literally said that after the movie, she went and cried in the bathroom because there’s so many points of her own fears which is touched on, but in a way that left her not in despair, but in a state of more hopefulness and just reframing how she was told we look,” Moore tells PEOPLE of audiences’ reactions to the movie in Toronto.
The Substance is in theaters Sept. 20.
