Get ready to lose yourself in a surreal paranormal adventure as Netflix has just dropped the third trailer for the upcoming anime series Dandadan. Based on the manga of the same name by Yukinobu Tatsu, Dandadan follows Momo, a young girl who believes in spirits, and her crush, Okarun, who believes in aliens, as their lives are turned upside down when they discover that both exist. Filled with action and mystery, and brought to life with an incredible artistic style, Dandadan is a journey into the occult to find, erm… Okarun’s missing testicles (we told you – it’s bizarre).
Anime featuring demons and spirits has become immensely popular among even the most casual of anime fans. Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen, and Chainsaw Man are among some of the biggest new anime around, and Dandadan is hoping to join those ranks. The latest trailer shows off some of the series’ unique aliens and spirits, including Turbo Granny, Evil Eye, Mr. Mantis Shrimp, and Acrobatic Silky. The trailer also showcases the anime’s opening soundtrack (a staple of the medium). Titled “Otonoke,” the song is, rather appropriately, performed by the band Creepy Nuts. Check out the latest trailer below:
Dandadan begins streaming on Netflix on October 6, just in time for spooky season. While Netflix has yet to reveal the number of episodes, the fan base is speculating that Season 1 will run for roughly 12 episodes. The official logline for the series reads:
“A story of young love and occult battles begins. When Momo and Okarun’s beliefs clash, they’re thrown into a world of ghosts, aliens, and awakened powers.”
Netflix Is Going Big on Its Anime Library
Just like the streamer is packing its library full of reality TV programs and true-crime shows and documentaries, Netflix is investing big in anime. Looking to compete with medium-specific streamers such as Crunchyroll, Netflix boasts some of the best new and classic anime shows and movies in its library. Two of the aforementioned shows, Jujutsu Kaisen and Demon Slayer, are both streaming on Netflix. Additionally, the platform hosts some of the most popular Shounen (aimed at a male, teenage demographic) anime around. Mob Psycho 100, One Punch Man, Baki the Grappler, My Hero Academia, and Black Clover are all streaming on Netflix.
You can also find some of the most underrated anime series on Netflix. If you haven’t already seen them, shows like Hell’s Paradise, Hajime No Ippo, Spy X Family, Monster, Vinland Saga, Cowboy Bebop (the original, not the live-action remake), Violet Evergarden, and the recently released Terminator Zero should all be added to your watchlist immediately. As well as new shows, almost the entire Studio Ghibli filmography is streaming on Netflix. The studio’s saddest movie to date, Grave of the Fireflies, is joining the platform soon. As is their latest Oscar-winning movie, The Boy and the Heron. Anime has finally found its place among mainstream audiences. While the medium still boasts some bizarre quirks, even the most casual of audiences are beginning to embrace Japanese animation as a regular part of pop culture.
Dandadan
premieres on Netflix and Crunchyroll on October 6, 2024.
