Nicolas Cage’s Spider-Man Noir series has received some positive updates recently, but the best one yet has now been officially confirmed. Oscar- and multiple BAFTA nominee Brendan Gleeson is joining the world of Spider-Noir as the show’s villain. Gleeson’s exact role has not been revealed, and fans are desperately speculating and debating online who the villain could be, and it is currently believed he will be playing a city mob boss who Cage’s protagonist will clash with.
Cage first played Spider-Man Noir in 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, lending his voice to the cult-favorite Spider-Man variant. Hailing from a world inspired by 1940s noir thrillers, Spider-Man Noir is a classic American detective, and his story will soon be brought into live-action. Spider-Noir was one of the first projects announced for Gleeson following his nomination for Best Supporting Actor at the 2023 Oscars for The Banshees of Inisherin. The series is the second comic-book project the actor is attached to; Gleeson also has a role in Todd Phillips’ upcoming Joker: Folie à Deux (starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga).
The new series is slowly filling out its cast. Alongside Cage and the recently announced Gleeson, Spider-Noir will also feature New Girl star Lamorne Morris. Unlike Gleeson, Morris’ role has been revealed. The actor is playing Robbie Robertson, described as:
“Driven, hard-working, and won’t take no for an answer. A dedicated journalist trying to make it with the odds stacked against him as a black professional in 1930s New York. He takes on riskier stories that no one else would touch in order to catch attention and a paycheck. He is willing to do whatever is necessary for his career.”
Spider-Noir Will Be Like the “Golden Age” of Comics
Details are still emerging about the upcoming Spider-Noir series. The new show, which will stream on Prime Video, does not yet have a production or release schedule. While the show is still in its infancy, Nicolas Cage described the vibe he hopes to bring to the series as a long-time comic book fan:
“I mean, the fantasy would be that I could try to aspire to be something more Golden Age. I wanted to have that kind of aura, you know, like the more enigmatic, you don’t know too much. That’s why I’m not on social media. That’s the thinking, anyway. I don’t know. We’ll see what happens if I do [Spider-Man Noir], and they put me in black-and-white. We’ll see if we can get some of that flavor.”
Exact plot details are still being kept under tight wraps. However, we know the series will take place in the 1930s and will focus on an older Spider-Man Noir looking back on his time as New York’s hero. The official logline reads:
”
Spider-Noir
tells the story of an aging and down on his luck private investigator (Cage) in 1930s New York, who is forced to grapple with his past life as the city’s one and only superhero.”
Spider-Noir
has no official release date, but the series will stream on Prime Video.
