After her crowd-pleasing cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine, Logan star Dafne Keen hopes Laura/X-23 has a long future in the MCU. Marvel Studios’ latest smash-hit, directed by Shawn Levy, brings its eponymous heroes (played by Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, respectively) into the confines of the MCU as fans say goodbye to Fox’s X-Men cinematic universe. Along the way, the pair are joined by some long-time fan favorites and exciting new additions, including Blade (Wesley Snipes), Elektra (Jennifer Garner), and Gambit (Channing Tatum). All four of the supporting heroes are confirmed to have survived the events of Deadpool & Wolverine, meaning there’s a chance we could see them again in the future.
While Wesley Snipes and Jennifer Garner may very well be done with their respective characters, Dafne Keen isn’t ready to give up the mantel of X-23. Speaking to Empire Magazine, the actress was asked about her potential MCU future. The actress didn’t reveal too much (likely under threat from Marvel Studios’ secretive spoiler squad) about any potential projects she may already be signed up for, but Keen is, well, keen to play the character again in another MCU movie. She said:
“I would 100% do this for the rest of my life.”
Dafne Keen first played Laura/X-23 in James Mangold’s Logan, which was initially intended to be Hugh Jackman’s farewell to the character. Keen was only 11 years old when she first played the character, and delivered a scene-stealing performance — which is a tough ask against the acting heavyweight that is Hugh Jackman. After Disney bought back the rights to the X-Men characters, many fans assumed that X-23 had been forgotten by the studio. But, her appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine means the character could still have a long and prosperous future in the MCU.
Dafne Keen Has ‘Only Scratched the Surface’ of X-23
When audiences are introduced to Laura in Logan, she is escaping the Alkali-Transigen company, who experimented on her in the hopes of turning her into a mutant weapon. Little was revealed about Laura’s backstory, as Logan largely focused on the aging Wolverine. When Laura returned to our screens in Deadpool & Wolverine, the level of excitement was matched with a tidal wave of questions. How did she end up in The Void? Did she form a new X-Men squad? What happened to her between Logan and Deadpool & Wolverine?
Dafne Keen hopes to answer all these questions and more in another MCU project. Speaking to the Phase Zero podcast recently, the actress revealed that she’s desperate to return as Laura in the future, and said that Marvel Studios have barely “scratched the surface” of her character. Keen said:
“I would love to come back. I would pay them to come back. Playing Laura has been the biggest honor of my life. To me, we’ve only scratched the surface with her since she’s such a complex character. She’s so cool, just from a fan’s standpoint.”
