Steve Brown and Ace Frehley have made their ‘best’ record so far.
In a new interview with Sonic Perspectives, Brown discussed his involvement in Frehley’s new album, ‘10,000 Volts.’ He also revealed the chat he and the former Kiss rocker had. In his words, Frehley told him that his solo records were not as good as they should have been:
“When we got done that first day when we were finishing up, Ace said to me, ‘I really love this and I want every song to be like this, I want every song to be great.’ It was him, he said that and he goes ‘I know my records over the last couple of years haven’t been as good as maybe they should be, and that’s no slag on anybody. It just is what it is.’”
As a result, the duo worked on the ‘best’ album they have done so far:
“I took him and I gave him a hug and I said ‘Dude, you know I love you, I’ve known you for a long time. If we do this together I promise you we will make the best record probably since your 1978 solo record,’ and I think that’s what we achieved.”
Frehley Used The Same Guitar Playing Style He Did With Kiss
Frehley contributed to ten Kiss albums before leaving the band in 1982.
The band’s self-titled debut album was the first one to have Frehley in it. As it appears, it’s also the same guitar style the former Kiss rocker used in his recent solo album. In another discussion with Sonic Perspectives, Frehley said:
“I’m still playing guitar the same way I did when I was on the first record with Kiss. My style is pretty distinctive but it’s not that special in my opinion.”
Frehley Was Almost Not Credited For His Own Album
Frehley’s work with Brown almost caused him trouble, because he almost didn’t get the credits for the album. During a chat with The Metal Voice, the guitarist brushed off rumors that ‘10,000 Volts’ was mostly written only by Brown. He said:
“Me and Steve (Brown) work well together. I got aggravated the other day because I heard that people were saying I didn’t write any of the songs on the record and it was all Steve Brown. And then Steve was doing (The Podcast) ‘Three Sides of the Coin’ and he kind of confirmed that (by answering a question on the podcast) ‘How much did Ace bring to the table?’ And he (Steve Brown) goes ‘Well, I pretty much brought about 97%.’”
Brown later called the former Kiss rocker and apologized. The rocker explained what kind of a person Brown was:
“I was really shocked when he said that because that’s not the case and I called him up and he apologized to me. He’s a wonderful guy. I love him. You know he was so excited about the record and they were asking some questions that weren’t rehearsed. He had no idea, so you know everybody sometimes toots their own horn a little more than they should sometimes without thinking.”
