Welcome to The Blueprint, where we break down the celebrity looks we want to wear right now and build them back up, piece by piece.
I’ve got some new homework thanks to Katie Holmes: I need to recreate one of my new favorite style moments from her. And lucky for me, it isn’t hard work, nor is it something I have to do at home — it’s actually so fun to play dress up.
On Monday, the 45-year-old smiled for the cameras on the streets of New York City in a floral mock neck blouse, some relaxed black jeans, and a pair of mules with an itty bitty heel that remind me of the comfy shoes Meghan Markle wears, just a wee bit fancier.
And like many of us, she couldn’t leave the house without a purse. She’s been displaying her collection of tote bags lately, but this time, she returned to the more compact style she carried in April and last December: a nifty crossbody bag, which Jennifer Garner owns, too.
Katie Holmes’ Outfit Blueprint
Qirno Mock Neck Blouse
Covering up my neck in the fall and winter just comes naturally at this point. However, I’m not about feeling sweaty or confined, so a mock neck, or a more breathable turtleneck, is chef’s kiss.
This one has pink roses and pops of green, and according to one shopper, “It will keep you warm, though it’s very lightweight.” It’s also 35 percent off right now, so you can get it for under $20.
Gap High-Rise Barrel Jeans
I’ve got jeans in nearly every color, except black, and I need a pair for fall. These ones are a subtle way to try barrel jeans, since the legs aren’t so exaggerated, and they actually look like a comfortable pair I wouldn’t mind wearing for hours on end. They come in sizes 24 to 35, plus regular, tall, and petite inseams.
Travistar Crossbody Bag
What I love most about Holmes’ bag is the fact that it looks like both a shoulder bag and a crossbody purse. The strap is long, yet the bag doesn’t hang all the way down at her hips — and this one from Amazon can do the same. It comes with two straps, so you can wear it exactly where you want, and the little gold accents even remind me of ones seen on designer bags.
Charles by Charles David Aloe Mule
Baby heels, like the ones on these $50 mules, give me the same unstoppable feeling that a 6-inch pair of stilettos does, but the only difference is I can actually walk in them. Plus, they slip on and off, and I don’t need to twist or contort my legs to secure a tiny buckle.
