If you’re a Green Day fan, you might remember Billie Joe Armstrong’s iHeart meltdown where he had only one minute left for their performance. Well, they are back to iHeart with a more recent performance with no meltdowns.
Green Day returned to the iHeartRadio stage as performers at the 2024 iHeartRadio Music Awards. They performed ‘Basket Case’ again to make up for their past incident.
This time, everything went smoothly, and Armstrong even sang some of the song’s early demo lyrics. The band also received The Landmark Award and played ‘Bobby Sox’ from their latest album, ‘Saviors.’
What Really Happened?
In 2012, Armstrong had an outburst during the band’s performance at the iHeartRadio Music Festival. They were playing ‘Basket Case’ when the organizers signaled them to wrap it up. Armstrong yelled:
“Give me a f*cking break. One minute left? You’re gonna give me one f*cking minute? Let me tell you something, I’ve been around since 19-f*cking-88. And you’re gonna give me one f*cking minute? You gotta be f*cking kidding me. I’m not Justin Bieber, you motherf*ckers!”
He then smashed his guitar and walked offstage. After the incident, Armstrong went into rehab for alcohol and prescription pills. In a 2020 interview with Rolling Stone, he talked about the incident:
“The next morning, I woke up. I asked [my wife] Adrienne, ‘How bad was it?’ She said, ‘It’s bad.’ I called my manager. He said, ‘You’re getting on a plane, going back to Oakland and going into rehab immediately.’”
