Politics intersecting with entertainment is pretty commonplace, especially during an election year, and that intersection can often be unpleasant. This election year alone is bound to be divisive and proof of that can be seen in the public criticism actor Bradley Whitford has leveled at Curb Your Enthusiasm star, Cheryl Hines. The actress is married to Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who recently dropped out of the presidential race and endorsed former POTUS Donald Trump soon after. Hines has since released her own statement following her husband’s decision, and Whitford took to social media to blast the actress for being complicit in her husband’s support of Trump.
Whitford took to his X/Twitter page and, while The West Wing actor’s post was riddled with sarcasm, it was also very pointed in its criticism. Whitford states that, by staying silent about her husband’s decision, Hines very well supports some of the things that Trump has been alleged of doing, and what he might plan to do, should he become president again, regarding women’s rights. The actor has thrown his support behind democratic nominee Kamala Harris, and drags Hines for staying quiet while her “lunatic husband” supports Trump.
“Hey @CherylHines, way to stay silent while your lunatic husband throws his support behind the adjudicated rapist who brags about stripping women of their fundamental rights. Gutsy. Great example for the kids. Profile in courage.”
Cheryl Hines Released a Statement Supporting Her Husband but Not Explicitly Endorsing Donald Trump
Following RFK Jr. pulling out of the race and backing Trump, Hines did release a statement on her social media that supported her husband’s decision but did not exactly support his endorsement of Trump. Hines stated, in part:
“I deeply respect the decision Bobby made to run on the principle of unity. Over the last year and a half, I have met some extraordinary people from all parties, Democrats, Republicans and independents. It’s been my experience that the vast majority of all parties are truly good people who want the best for our country and for each other.”
It should also be noted that Hines has criticized Donald Trump in the past for both his policies and his behavior.
The political differences within the home appear to still be prevalent for Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Hines, as he suggested in his own post on social media that his decision to back Trump was, as he put it, “a political decision with which she is very uncomfortable.” Other members of Kennedy’s family were also not too pleased by his recent move, and while it’s very normal for family members to differ on political beliefs, it does bear mentioning when it happens within a family of such political influence. You can read Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s statement below:
“I am so grateful to my amazing wife Cheryl for her unconditional love, as I made a political decision with which she is very uncomfortable. I wish this also for the country — love and unity even in the face of disagreement. We will need that in coming times.”
As of this writing, Hines nor RJK Jr. have responded to Whitford’s post, but it has led to debates on both sides, with some supporting Whitford for calling her out while others rallied behind Hines, suggesting she should not be publicly shamed into not standing by her husband.
