Metallica’s Kirk Hammett made an unexpected choice for his favorite Queen song during a recent chat with Total Guitar.
Many might assume Metallica’s rendition of ‘Stone Cold Crazy’ would be Hammett’s top pick from Queen’s vast catalog, but his actual favorite is from the 1980 album ‘The Game.’ The band made the song to get people dancing at a Munich disco they often visited.
Hammett talked about his choice, saying:
“‘Dragon Attack.’ Urgh! I love that song! Brian’s guitar sounds so overly saturated on that song, more so than other songs. It’s like he walked over to his fucking tone booth and just turned it up to 11.”
Hammett Expressed Admiration For Brian May
The guitarist added, praising Brian May’s guitar work:
“Brian May has just such a wide reach. He’s like David Gilmour. Both of those guys have such a wide, wide reach. They can play extremely just like beautiful! Or, man, they can just f*cking make you cry with their guitar solos, and the sense of melody that both David Gilmour and Brian May have is incredible, man.”
The Making Of ‘Dragon Attack’
May also shared his thoughts on ‘Dragon Attack’ in a chat with Total Guitar. The musician stated:
“It’s got such an amazing feel. We were in that funk place, but this one has a real kind of rock-funk feel. And again, it started off very spontaneously, me playing along with Deacy. And, probably, it was more Deacy’s riff than mine, to be honest. But I took hold of it and built it into the song that it became. It came out of spontaneity, and it came out of, I think, wanting to play the kind of music which was inspiring us when we would go down to the rock disco after work in Munich every night.”
May also explained that he created ‘Dragon Attack’ to fit the club’s vibe and get everyone excited and dancing. The song has a simple, open style and focuses on the riff from the bass, drums, and guitar. ‘Dragon Attack’ became a favorite at live shows from 1980 to 1985.
