In a recent chat with Guitar Player, Mark Tremonti said the other members of Creed often pushed back against his ideas to make the band more metal.
“No. To begin with, I think our band was like a melting pot of different styles,” the guitarist explained when asked if Creed’s labels like post-grunge or alt-metal influenced his writing. “I loved Alice In Chains and Soundgarden when they came out but my influences came from way before then. I was the metal guy in the band, while Scott grew up listening to a lot of Elvis, the Doors and classic rock.”
Tremonti continued, “He was very sheltered early on; I don’t think a lot of rock and roll was getting played in his house. Brian was a Rush guy, Scott Phillips’ favourite band was Living Colour. So as the guy who wrote most of Creed’s music, I would come with metal. And they would constantly push back on me, saying it was ‘too metal.’ I had to fit the mould with the rest of the guys, and that’s how we got our sound.”
Creed is currently working on their new album. “I had a whole record on my hands for Creed before we parted ways in 2012… If we start over and just dove in again, we could do better. I think it’d be good to try to get back to that original sound,” Mark told Guitar Interactive this month.
The rocker also talked about a new record in April, saying, “It’s been something that people have been asking us for years about new music, so it’s just a matter of us getting back together be in the same room because it’s always a matter of timing for us.”
He added, “This cruise was 3 years in the making now so everything happened so quickly, it was so rapid fire, it was stuff that’s actually get music done for the surround of things but I’m sure the next time we get back out we’re going to have to have new music and everybody’s been asking for it.”
Creed’s latest album ‘Full Circle’ came out in 2009. The group’s North American tour goes on through August in various cities. They will also tour again in the fall of 2024.
