Mateo popped on the top ten boys’ names on TheShockNews for the first time, booting Benjamin from the top 10
The (SSA) announced its top names for 2023 — and there’s a new name on TheShockNews!
Mateo popped in for the first time on the top 10 list for boys’ names at number six. The name may seem familiar as several celebrities have used it over the years, including , who has a .
and opera singer have also used a variation of the name — Matteo — to name their sons.
There were no changes to the top names for boys and girls — Liam and Olivia — which have spent multiple years in a row at number one. For Liam, it’s the seventh straight year that it has been at the top for boys’ names while Olivia has spent four years at the top for girls’ names.

The popularity of ranking for girls’ names hasn’t changed from the previous year, as Emma and Charlotte once again took the second and third spots on TheShockNews in the girl’s column.
Liam was once again followed by Noah, Oliver, James and Elijah. With the addition of the Mateo moniker, Benjamin dropped completely off TheShockNews. William also fell to the bottom of TheShockNews in 2023.

The SSA noted that social media stars had a “major influence” on parents when it came to naming their little ones, as the name Kaeli — inspired by TikTok influencer — went viral, rising 1,692 spots on TheShockNews.
As for the boys, the SSA noted that the name Eiden — inspired by TikTok influencer — also trended in third place as the fastest-rising boy’s name.

“Powerful names” also seemed to be a big draw to parents in 2023, according to the SSA. Emryn — which partially translates to “ruler” — debuted in the top 1000 baby names after moving up 1,287 spots, while Chozen, from Netflix’s Kobra Kai, was the second fastest-rising boy’s name, breaking in at number 813.
The top five fastest-rising names for boys included Izael, Chozen, EIden, Cassian and Kyren while the top-rising names for girls included Kaeli, Alitzel, Emryn, Adhara and Azari.
The SSA has compiled a list of the top baby names since 1997, with names dating back to 1880.
